The

Wizard
of Oz

The Wizard of Oz is really two slightly different versions of the archetype: the one found in the original books, and the one presented in the movie. Some of the changes are fairly significant - for instance, Dorothy is only a child in the Baum books, but is a teenager in the movie. I recommend fans of the movie read a few of the original books to get a better sense of Baum's intention.

For a more faithful adaptation of Baum's work, watch "Return to Oz", an 80's movie starring a young Fairuza Balk that combines the plots of a few of the later novels. The atmosphere is appropriately surreal, and less stage-like than the popular Oz film.
