Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

&

Alice Through the Looking Glass

This is an interesting example of the archetype because it has two parts. First, Alice accidentally enters the strange world by falling down the rabbit hole; she is mostly wandering, and things happen to her along the way. However in the second book, Alice enters a similarly strange place deliberately, and proceeds with purpose to become a queen.

Many films have been made based on these books, but I would recommend Jan Svankmajer's "Alice", made with animated puppets and a live girl in a very surreal manner, and the British live action "Through the Looking Glass" with Kate Beckinsale which really captures the somewhat darker and threatening aspects of Looking Glass Land. Also, see my page on Alice Day, an annual celebration of Alice's adventures Underground.

I also recommend the following books related to Alice:

Alice's Journey Beyond the Moon by R.J. Carter (a "sequel" to the original duo, quite well done)
The Art of Alice in Wonderland by Stephanie Lovett Stoffel (featuring examples from many different Alice illustrators)
The Annotated Alice edited by Martin Gardner (with notes on the story behind the stories)
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland Pop-Up by Robert Sabuda
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland illustrated by Greg Hildebrandt (some of the best illustrations ever)
Alice's Adventures Under Ground by Lewis Carroll (his first version of the Alice story, a little different than the popular version)
