A temenos is sacred space. It can
include a naos (temple), but it might also be a simple grove of
trees. Below is a list of Dionysian holy places and related things
that could be the focal place of some Dionysian worship. Below that
are photos of thiasos members' altars, shrines and ritual spaces. In
the future this space will include shrines that modern pagans have
built for Dionysos that are open to the public.
Places with Dionysian
associations:
- Naxos, Delphi and many other
places in Greece - more
information on his traditional holy places
- Garden of Dionysos, Portland
Maine. The side courtyard next to the UU Church on Congress
St. Not its official name, but rather named so by local teenagers,
possibly due to the influence of pagans in the area. Still, has
now become known as such.
- Theatre Mask of Bacchus,
Portland, Maine. On Temple St. in front of some shops lies this
stonework mask which was found during the excavation of the
library, having once adorned the Elm Theater. The mask's open
mouth is perfect for leaving offerings to Dionysos especially in
his role as god of the theatre.
- Dionysos & Nymphs Statue,
Kansas City. On 47th and Broadway in the courtyard of the
Cheesecake Factory.
- Reproduction of the Theatre of
Dionysos, Morristown, NJ. On the grounds of the College of
Saint Elizabeth, built of stone into the side of a hill, this
replica of the Athenian theatre is used by the college and others
for theatrical productions including ancient Greek
plays.
