Ode to Wisdom

Strictly speaking, this isn't something that I wrote. It's actually a piece that I wove together from passages in the Bible and Apocrypha. I wrote it back before I had found Hellenismos, while I was studying Esoteric Christianity and Gnosticism. Just thought that I'd put it up here, as you can never honor the Givers of Wisdom enough - be they Sophia, Chokma, Athena, Thoth, or Tara.

Happy is he who has found wisdom, he who has acquired understanding, for wisdom is more profitable than silver, and the gain she brings is better than gold! She is more precious than red coral, and none of your jewels can compare with her. In her right hand is long life, in her left are riches and honour.

Wisdom shines brightly and never fades; she is readily discerned by those who love her, and by those who seek her she is found. She is more beautiful than the sun, and every constellation. Compared with the light of day, she is found to excel, for the light of day is impermanent, but wisdom does not give way. She spans the world from end to end, and gently orders all things. In wisdom there is a spirit intelligent and holy, unique in its kind yet made up of many parts, subtle, free-moving, lucid, spotless, clear, neither harmed nor harming, loving what is good, eager, unhampered.

She is beneficent, kindly towards mortals, steadfast, unerring, untouched by care, all-powerful, all-surveying, and permeating every intelligent, pure, and most subtle spirit. For wisdom moves more easily than motion itself; she is so pure she pervades and permeates all things. She is but one, yet can do all things; herself unchanging, she makes all things new; age after age she enters into holy souls and makes them friends with God and prophets. Her ways are pleasant ways and her paths all lead to prosperity. She is a tree of life to those who grasp her, and those who hold fast to her are safe.

By wisdom the earth's foundations were laid, and by understanding the heavens were set in place. Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget or turn a deaf ear to what I say. Do not forsake her, and she will watch over you; love her, and she will safeguard you; cherish her, and she will lift you high; if only you embrace her, she will bring you to honour. She will set a becoming garland on your head; she will bestow on you a glorious crown.

Wisdom said, "Come to me, all you who desire me, and eat your fill of my fruit. To think of me is sweeter than honey, to possess me sweeter than the honeycomb. Whoever feeds on me will hunger for more; whoever drinks from me will thirst for more. To obey me is to be safe from disgrace; those who make me their business will not go astray."

She it was who gave me true understanding of things as they are: a knowledge of the structure of the world and the operation of the elements; the beginning and end of epochs and their middle course; the alternating solstices and changing seasons; the cycles of the years and the constellations; the nature of living creatures and behaviour of wild beasts; the violent force of winds and human thought; the varieties of plants and the virtues of roots. I learned it all, hidden and manifest, for I was taught by wisdom, by her whose skill made all things. Holy is Wisdom, holy, holy, holy!
